Everyday Heroes

2003

This project was commissioned by the City of New York through their Percent for Art program administered by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the School Construction Authority's Public Art for Public Schools program.

It is permanently installed in the High School for Law Enforcement and Public Safety in Jamaica, NY (Queens).

For this project, I worked with 12 law enforcement and public safety agencies, from the local to the federal level, to collect items related to their work. At the same time, I researched and collected items related to people who worked in the service of their communities, also on a broad scale from local to international.

Each collected item is arranged and displayed in a stainless steel box (each 8" x 8" x 4"). The boxes are evenly distributed from floor to ceiling and among the five floors of the high school. A seperate section of the piece was created to acknowledge the events of 9/11/01, which took place during the construction of the high school and the creation of this art work. It is the first permanent memorial to 9/11 made in New York City.
